Last week, we were delighted to welcome Ela to the team as part of a week-long internship. At the end of the week, we sat down with Ela and asked her a few questions about her experience with us and her plans for the future.

What are you studying at university, and what made you interested in interning at onefourzero?

I am studying Physics at the University of Salford. I am passionate about the maths and data analysis I have been doing as part of my course, specifically developing analytical models using Python. My academic work has really increased my interest in this area, and I am particularly drawn to the financial services industry. The data-led approach that onefourzero employs to provide clients with a variety of unique insights using different tools is fascinating. I really love the company’s ethos around supporting women in STEM, so onefourzero felt like a good fit for me.

What were the key skills you were looking to develop throughout your time with us?

As part of my degree dissertation, I’m interested in exploring automated risk management. I wanted to use onefourzero’s expertise in data analysis and risk prediction techniques while also getting exposure to practical commercial applications. I was hoping to get experience in the industry to confirm the areas of finance I’d like to focus on and was particularly grateful to be able to learn from Fleur’s experience as a female CEO working in finance.

Is there anything that surprised you about your experience in consulting?

I was surprised at how broad the product offering is at onefourzero, and that consulting isn’t just providing information and giving advice. It’s about facilitating client learning using tools like their dashboard, which is an excellent way to allow clients to have an aggregate view on demand. There’s a diverse range of clients that onefourzero works with, and it was great to see how much trust the clients place in them.

What are your plans for the next year, and how do you hope to use the experience going forwards?

I am planning to use the skills I gained to help shape my final degree dissertation, allowing me to complete my Physics degree in 2023. After I have completed my degree, I hope to use the data science experience I have gained to work in financial analysis, hopefully with a company like onefourzero!

All of us at onefourzero wish Ela the best of luck with the rest of her degree, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for her!
